Have or had a Samsung 50’ DLP. Mother said sounded like it exploded one day – completely black – now hums.
No prior flags just happened.
MODEL NUMBER HL-R5078W _ SAID IT SOUNDED LIKE PLANE TAKING OFF - then everything went black however when i switched between sources it sounds like usual - almost - heard a switching and no humming then would start humming _ no sign of picture back - stayed completely black.
Regular white large lamp appears fine - took out.
Believe it is the multi color lamp,
However do u think I need to replace multi color lamp (MCL) and housing???
While I’m at it should I change lamp white lamp??
Is it difficult TO CHANGE? Are specs online? Does it need to be calibrated?
Or do you think it is an electrical problem know mcl needs replaced any other suggestions - power supply -
It is(was) My TV but left at mothers (78) and that was it – she loved it didn’t have heart to take away – watched a lot of black and white shows (50 -50A%).
Keeps remarking how she misses it etc - insinuating can’t see new 25’ TV – I know have LCD 40’

AS A POST SCRIPT (i.e. - p.s) DOESN’T – IT AGGRAVATE YOU IT DIES RIGHT AFTER EXTENDED WARRANTY DATE (manufacturer date 8/06) died two weeks after. Why is manufacturer’s warranty not ADDED TO EXTENDED WARRANTY? Company now liquidated - chapter 7 – one guess – any help suggestions appreciated!

It's not a multi-colored lamp. It's one lamp. The humming is coming from the color wheel.
This is how it works:
Power Supply > ballast > Lamp > color wheel > light engine > picture
