My Samsung DLP made a pop noise - the picture began to flicker and went out. Tried to restart and heard it spin up a couple of times but the fan/color wheel makes louder than normal noise and sounds like it is varying in speed - with intermediate squeaks. Finally it stops trying and the 3 lights come on. I tried replacing the lamp but that was not it. I thought about replacing the ballast but I don't hear it trying to click on an off repeatedly on startup. Cooling fan for lamp seems to run fine. Maybe color wheel? Any ideas?

It definitely sounds like the color wheel, however I recommend you to check it physically before buying anything, use this replacement guide to know how to take it out: http://guides.fixyourdlp.com/samsung/bp96-01579a.php.

I didn't want to take it apart before I got the new part but I guess I will physically check it out although I'm not sure what to look for. DM doesn't carry the color wheel for the HLR7178WX/XAA they referred me to Samsungparts.com, everyone else seems to have it on backorder. I think the part # is BP96-1103A. It seems like there have been a couple of changes to the part number over time. Can you help me confirm the part number?

The part# you have is correct, BP96-01103A.

Ninja -- Thanks for the help -- I did physically examine the old color wheel and there was a shattered piece missing on the wheel. So I'm now just waiting for the part to come off backorder. Thanks again for all your help!!
