HLS6187WX/XAA screen dark all of a sudden

My DLP is displaying a dark picture. I thought that it might be the lamp but when I take off the back cover the lamp is shinning bright so I don't think that is the problem. Any idea what would cause this?

Hello Copaz,
To start off, I strongly disagree peeking into the light tunnel when the light is on since these actually shine brighter than the sun and can cause some damage. But to answer you question, the lamp, even though it ignites it can still be weak enough to not project the necessary luminosity. If there are no strange noises or discoloration/distortion on the screen before it went out. I would start by replacing the lamp first.
