TV just shuts off by itself sometimes!

Post by GGorman04 » Tue May 11, 2010 9:59 pm

I wanted to see if someone can help me with my crazy Samsung DLP.
About a month ago, I noticed the tv was not as bright as before.(2 yrs old).
I bought a replacement bulb from discount merchant and installed.
It worked beautiful for about 3 weeks.
Now today, after a few minutes, the tv would just shut off. No warnings.
I dont know if my install had anything to do with it, but I took out the bulb and reinstalled.
The picture is now brighter. Could this be related??
Has anyone had the tv just shut off?
I do not hear any clicking sounds.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello GGorman04.
So far you tv has only shut down once, am I right? If so that probably means that after you took it out and reinstalled it, the tv lamp timer reset it self automatically. In most Samsung after you replace the lamp you have to manually reset the lamp timer, so if the tv turns itself of again with no warning, try resetting it.

Another possibility might have been that you didn’t insert the lamp housing all the way in, so it was making a week connection.
Keep me posted on any more problems you encounter.
Good luck.

Night kid, I really appreciate your help.
Yes, I noticed on the reinstall that I did not secure the one screw which holds the housing and light into position. I think that may have been the problem.
It has been a week and it has not happened again.

NightKid and Others

The tv no longer shuts off by itself, so I believe the lamp was not installed correctly the first time. Once in awhile I hear a humming sound from the tv. It will last about a minute and then I do not hear it. What could this be?
Thanks

Hello again GGorman04.
That humming noise that you hear, is it very load, or you can barely hear it?
That sound can either be from a fan inside of the TV or the color wheel that about to give. I recommend you open up your TV to check your color wheel physically. See if its broken or damaged in any way, also try to spin it manually, see if it makes any strange noise while its spins. If nothing is out of the ordinary, then you can discard the wheel and focus on the fans.
Keep me posted on any new developments.

NightKid, I really appreciate your advice.
Since I am a novice at repairs, can you tell me where the color wheel is located?
Thanks

Hello again GGorman04.
Here is a link of how to replace your color wheel. http://www.fixyourdlp.com/guides/samsun ... 01579a.php here you can get an idea of where your color wheel might be (physically located). Technically it should be in the light engine.
If you have any more questions, feel free to ask.

NightKid
You are the best. I plan on getting to this today. If the color wheel is okay, how can I check the fans?
Have a Great Weekend!!

For the fans, make sure that all of them are working (spinning) and if one is stalling or showing any kind of abnormality you’ll have to replace it.
Have a nice labor day weekend you too.
Good luck.

I have a Samsung DLP HLP4663W & the picture disappears a couple of times a day. I replaced the lamp assembly in January of 2009 and it was GREAT! The guides at http://www.fixyourdlp.com/guides/guides.php made it easy.

Now, though, the picture disappears but the TV is still on. If I turn off the TV & turn it back on, the picture comes back. Looking at the back of the TV, I can still see light coming out of the cooling vents for the lamp assembly. This is different than before when the lamp was failing. That powered down the TV & killed the sound to my AV receiver.

I've cleaned the fans of any dust, which I learned to do when the lamp assembly was failing, but no difference.

Any ideas? Thanks for anything you can suggest

Daniel

Hello sanmanjax.
This is a problem that I’ve heard a few times. It’s typically related with a problem with the DMD board. To be sure, turn off all the light at night, see it the TV is pitch black (it’s a defective DMD), or if you can see the screen light up black (it’s a bad digital video board), in any case you’ll need to replace one of those parts.
Hope this helps you out.

Night Kid

Sorry to bring up an old topic, but how do I check the fans? Are there 2 fans? I opened the back where the lamp is and cleaned the one fan.
Is there anymore?

Thanks

Yes, there are normally 2 or 3 fans (some rear models have up to 5 I think). The most obvious are the one next to the lamp, the other one is the one next to the DMD board, and some times there is one near the ballast or power supply. I’m afraid you’re going to have to dig in deep to fine out if there are more or not, try to download you owners manual.
Good luck.

Hi,I have a Samsung DLP HL50a650cfxza. One morning my TV began to turn off and on, approx 3 seconds on and 3 seconds off. The only way to turn it off is by pulling the plug from the wall. I went on vacation for 10 days I tried it again but it turns on with no picture and turns off immediately showing the green and red lights. People say its the lamp or balast, but I checked the lamp and looks normal, iI not sure if the lamp should look burned or something. Im open for sugestion, thank you

Hello robinthehouse.
Have you ever replaced the lamp in the past 2 – 3 years? Because that the average life span for those kind of lamps. And just because a lamp seams ok, is no reason to discard it. Unlike conventional lamps that have a filament in the middle that brakes when the lamp goes bad, these UHP lamps have a small chamber that holds mercury gas inside. So its probably burn all of it.
My recommendation is that you first try to replace your lamp, and then we can proceed from there. Try looking on http://www.discount-merchant.com/ or ebay.com (Personal recommendation: buy a Philips lamp, the last more & have the best quality.)
If you have any more questions feel free to ask.
