Samsung SP50L7HX (UK model)

I have had the Samsung SP50L7HX, (this is the UK model number not sure of US model number) for five years with no problems and been very pleased with it.
It has had two new bulbs first one went with a bang, secound one just died and TV showed warning light.
This week it started turning itself off and then back on again, the only way to stop it was to turn off the power. Didn't think it was the bulb as when it did come on, even if it was for a couple of minutes, it did display a perfect picture, and the bulb is only a year old.
Had an engineer out to look at it but he said it was the bulb! Was not convinced so I went into the service menu and did a "factory reset" and the TV has worked perfectly ever since! No new bulb.
As someone who is not technically minded, could this be a permanent cure, why would resetting the TV cure this type of problem? Could there be something underlying that is about to fail, would a failing bulb cause this?
Thanks for reading my first ever post on an internet forum!
