Too much fun with my TV...Please HELP!!!!!

Post by tmorganelli » Wed Jul 29, 2009 4:56 pm

Ok so - I replaced the bulb (got three flashing lights in front) TV still wouldnt come on - Then I posted up here and Eddie (great guy mind you!) replied he would go with the ballast because after reading all the posts I was having trouble deciding if I should be ordering ballast or colorwheel - Eddie steered me right.......so got the ballast installed it

Viola! TV worked ........... for 2 days.............it went out again last night - Smelled like something was burning a little and then shut down - Now it powers up regularly no whizzing no clicking and the video comes on and then we lose picture and audio stays on for a few seconds longer and then it flashes three lights again and shuts down.......

Any suggestions??? Is it really the colorwheel now? I dont hear anything..........clicking or whizzing that is..........HELP!!!!!!

TV is Samsung HLS5066 or something........like that about 3 - 4 years old..........

So far, again, we have replaced the lamp (with phillips one) and replaced the ballast .........just confused at this point because it was working for the first time......and now nothing and back to square one.......

Hi tmorganelli.

I'll try to help you the best I can. First of all we need to discard all kind of possible causes that are the cheapest and easiest to do:

1. Lamp timer: I don't know if you did this, but if not then the TV could be turning off because it thinks that has an old bulb, just follow this guide to reset the lamp hours meter: viewtopic.php?f=10&t=92.

2. Overheating: This could be the cause since you smelled something burning and the TV could be turning Off to prevent that something burns. Try vacuum all the dust inside the TV (specially fans and air vents), check if the fans are working properly and try also putting a fan pointing to the back of the TV, if this works then the issue is overheating.

3. Color wheel: I don't think this is your problem since you're able to see the picture for a few seconds, at least we can be sure this wasn't the problem you had before replacing the ballast. However checking the color wheel is an easy task. Check this guide to replace the color wheel in Samsung DLPs: http://guides.fixyourdlp.com/samsung/bp96-01579a.php, once you take the color wheel out, check if it has any damage or cannot spin freely.

4. DMD board: There is a possibility that your ballast, and color wheel are working properly, and the problem is with the device in charge of checking any problem in the system and turns it Off if "thinks" something is wrong. the DMD board, this could be the device that you smelled burning :? ...

Hope any of this advices helps you...

Thanks for the advice - We will try to check all - Dont think the reset worked but then again cant get the tv to stay on to know we've completed it. I do have a question about checking the fans....How do you check the fans to see if they are working properly when its taken apart? Thanks!
