hi, I'm Noerd. I'm new to thise site and was just poking around and checking it out when I saw this. I have to say that I am confused. Isn't this site for people that love Dat Phan? I mean, who cares if he is Chinese! That doesn't make him any less of a person or less funny as a comic. Besides, it isn't like Dat Phan's humor is China-centric. Clearly his act is pan-Asian! And clearly NBC (among others) have recognized what a valuble target market that represents. That kind of recognition comes from years of hard work, not from being Chinese.

I thought Margaret Cho taught us that funny is funny regardless of whatever country a comic is from. But maybe everybody wasn't watching as closely as I was.

He's Vietnamese.

I looked into what you said there and you are right. My bad. No offense to anybody from Vietnam or China meant. Geography has never been my forte. After realizing my blunder I Googled Vietnam and tried to educate myself a little about the world. Now I think Dat Phan is funnier than ever. A lot of his material I had assumed were humorous non-sequeters are actually well crafed relevant jokes.

And to the naysayers who have a problem with Dat Phan's use of accent in his act. I work with several Asian immigrants. Do you want me to tell them that you think their voices are cartoonish or stupid sounding? Have a heart. Unless you are an Indian, somebody from your family must have moved here from somewhere else. Do you think they arrived here sounding like they grew up in the suburbs of Toledo or something? How do you think they would have felt if you told them that their accents weren't funny?

I know an Ethiopian. Funny! Too many of his jokes are really jabs at Eritrea, But he just sounds really funny no matter what he says. He is really tall and skinny and his voice sounds partially British and partially something that is DEFINATELY not British.
