1. Why use a Log Splitter?
A log splitter comes in handy for splitting wood for a fireplace or wood-burning stove. Log splitters make the job go faster and easier and are a labor saving device. 2. Do log splitters require any assembly? The gas engine powered log splitters do require some assembly, while the compact electrics are fully assembled. Assembly takes about 1/2 hour and two people are recommended. 3. What size log splitter do I need? If you are splitting wood seasonally for winter firewood, a 22-Ton or 27-Ton log splitter is more than adequate. If you are using the log splitter year round or splitting hard woods then a 28-Ton or 35-Ton log splitter may serve your purposes better. 4. Do I need to add hydraulic fluid to my log splitter? Some models are shipped without hydraulic fluid added to the tank. Check the fluids before operation and add according to the dipstick level (see Operation manual). 5. What type of hydraulic fluid should I use in my log splitter? This depends upon the outside temperature where the log splitter is being used (see the Operation Manual and/or the NOTICE decal on the hydraulic tank), use AW-68 for temperatures above 50°F. 6. Will I need to sharpen the splitter’s wedge? The wedge, when appropriately used, should never require sharpening. It pushes through the wood and should remain sharp as long as it is not misused. 7. What is the largest log size that I can split? Logs should be 24” or less in length and 30” or less in diameter. 8. How fast can I split logs? Depending upon the model, you can generally split 3 logs per minute. The cycle time varies on each model, with commercial log splitters being somewhat faster. 9. The wedge does not move when the detent valve handle is extended, what is the problem? Check the hydraulic tank to make sure the fluid level is one inch from the top of the tank. 10. The wedge does not retract when the detent valve handle is pulled back, what is wrong? Check for wood chips in the rail that are preventing the wedge from moving back into position. 11. The wheels do not attach to the log splitter’s axle, what am I doing wrong? Remove the disposable spindle covers and wheel bearing caps before assembly. 12. How often should I change the engine oil? The oil should be changed annually for best operation, (see Engine Operation Manual). 13. How often should I change the hydraulic fluid? The hydraulic fluid should be changed after the first 25 hours of operation and then seasonally thereafter. 14. Why didn’t I receive a log catcher with my log splitter? Some models were offered without a log catcher to lower the overall cost of the splitter. Log catchers are available as an accessory item (see http://www.cnsuperpower.com). 15. What is the difference between 22, 27, 28 and 35-ton models? The most significant difference is the size of the cylinder and the time it takes to complete a “stroke”, i.e., fully extend the piston and wedge and then retract to the starting position. 16. How does a log splitter operate? An engine drives a pump that pumps hydraulic fluid from a hydraulic reservoir or tank through a valve to a cylinder. The cylinder has two sides which fill alternately and extend or retract a piston. The splitting wedge is on the end of the piston and is driven through the log which rests in the log cradle. Log splitters are rated by the amount of force the cylinder is capable of producing and the maximium pressure of the hydraulic system. |
